Joel's Creative Touch Program
Brightening Lives - One Room at a Time
Doug and Esme Guevara are the proud parents of their special needs son, Joel, whose diagnosis has profoundly shaped their perspective on life and inspired their commitment to helping others. Joel was diagnosed with a rare condition, KCNQ2, which affects the proper functioning of a potassium channel in the brain. KCNQ2 developmental and epileptic encephalopathy can cause seizures during infancy and lead to developmental challenges ranging from mild to severe.
Motivated by Joel’s strength, resilience, and joyful spirit, Doug and his wife, Esme, were inspired to make a meaningful difference in the lives of other special needs children and their families. Through their company’s expertise at LPS, they envisioned transforming the bedrooms of special needs children into bright, uplifting environments where they can live, learn, and thrive.
In February 2020, they launched a dedicated initiative—Joel’s Creative Touch—to support the special needs community in Loudoun County, Virginia. This program recognizes that many children spend significant time in their bedrooms, and it aims to transform these spaces into comforting sanctuaries that foster happiness, safety, and growth.
As part of this initiative, LPS selects a qualifying special needs child at least once a month to receive a complimentary room makeover.
